UMKC Team Wins Kansas State Tournament

The UMKC Debate team of juniors Andrew Allsup and Juan Garcia won the varsity division of the Kansas State University Debate Tournament that concluded on February 14th. Allsup and Garcia compiled a 5-2 preliminary round record with wins against Wichita State University, Missouri State University, and University of Texas-San Antonio. They were the fourth seed into the elimination rounds, where they beat teams from Missouri State and University of Texas – San Antonio en route to the final round. In the final round they defeated a team from the University of Kansas. This was the third time this year that Allsup and Garcia had been in a final round of a tournament, but this was their first tournament win.

UMKC debaters also brought home three of the top ten speaker awards at the tournament. Juan Garcia received the seventh overall speaker. Andrew Allsup was the sixth overall speaker. Junior Alex Bonnet received the second speaker award.

This victory marks the second tournament win for UMKC this season. In October, UMKC won the debate tournament at Arizona State University.

The Debate Team is now preparing for the National Debate Tournament District 3 Qualifying Tournament February 25-28. Two teams from UMKC will compete against regional rivals from Missouri, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas to qualify to the National Debate Tournament in Dallas, TX this March.
